Estrogen Highs - "Live at Cafe Nine" Cassette

Some people say punk, some say garage, even the term shoegaze has been thrown into the mix. Whatever you call Estrogen Highs, they are pure rock and roll and they prove it on their latest release (another great Safety Meeting Records release) “Live at Café Nine” on cassette. Yes, cassette.

They have recorded and released a tremendous album earlier this year titled “Red Over Red” and are constantly playing all over the Northeast. Check out BRC at Café 9 (250 State St) in New Haven on the February 23rd as Ct.com presents Royal Thunder, Ancient Wisdom, Stone Titan, and BedroomRehab Corporation. Straight to VHS - Rewinder

Article by Max Mercy (Via Mexican-robots.com)

People who think of Connecticut solely as a state full of country clubs and gold-lined streets have never been to New London.  And anybody who’s wondering where the spirit of punk-rock is these days can find it there.

While listening to "Rewinder," I smelled stale beer and sweat. I felt concrete under my sneakers. I saw dive bars and littered parking lots and empty strip malls. Suburbia after nightfall.

Stylistically, Straight to VHS makes use of early punk templates and can resemble pioneer groups like the Sex Pistols and the Wipers. Their production standards are relatively high for garagerock so I can understand the Jay Reatard comparisons. They’re working within the form, keeping the rough edges and apathetic attitude but it’s obvious they care how the sound comes across. They’re craftsmen.

At just over 20 minutes, the album is a sonic roller coaster ride with one song cascading into the next. The standout track that represents the whole experience is “patchwork city.” In the red vocals, sweet bass doodles, a chorus that turns the groove of the verses on its head and guitar with enough crunch to chip a tooth. The count-in alone is beautifully rock and roll.

Yup, the spirit of punk is alive. I’m not sure if it’s well but when has it ever been? One thing’s for sure: it takes equal amounts pain and love to play this kind of music.

Vektor get ready to blast Cherry Street into outer space

photo: Emily Ibarra
There have been many thrash bands coming out of the woodwork in the past few years. It seems as if we've been invaded by a bunch of groups that try to mimic the sound and look of an earlier, supposedly more golden, age. Unfortunately, a lot of these bands may get some of the sound right and maybe some even dress the part, but very few are adding anything new to this most classic of heavy sounds. It's a rare band that pushes the genre forward and should be celebrated.

Vektor is one such band.

Kevin MF King - "Feral Kids" Ep Review

Over the course of the last year a group of singer/songwriters set up shop in the Elm City, guys like Ben Erickson, Shaun Bowen, and Jason Prince. They are passionate and supportive and have started a small DIY scene in New Haven. They all play shows together and self-release their own CDs. Not to be outdone by his peers, KevinMF King has released "Feral Kids” EP and has gained his spot as “king” of the hill.

He is a ridiculously prolific artist, with recordings, performances, collaborations, as well as an intensely motivated music-geekdom that has taken him around the world. Chances are even if you're half-interested in experimental electronic music, laptop improv, noise, drill n bass, or you have come across Mimaroglu Music Sales, you've heard something by Keith Fullerton Whitman. His performance at Firehouse 12 will be introduce by a talk (free ticket required). A big thanks to all that helped make this come together.

Nightbitch Return To Scotty's To Spread The Gospel Of Sleaze

Our favorite group of sleazy, occult metal playing miscreants return to action this Saturday with a new release in tow. Yes, Nightbitch will be playing their home away from home, Scotty O'Boyles Cafe, in Meriden to celebrate the release of their new cassingle release, "Peculiar Worship", which features two new Nightbitch songs and is being put out by one of our favorite local progenitors of undeground music, No Visible Scars. As always, the festivities start around 9pm, where DJs will be spinning all the classic metal cuts to get you all hot and bothered for when Nightbitch takes the stage around 11pm. This is sure to be some good "adult" fun. So come on down and get yer sleaze on!
