12/26 - Sandy Hook Benefit w/The Anti Dentites, No, Heavy Breath, 10,000 Blades @ The Outer Space

Each year the holiday season seems to start earlier and earlier, packing droves of angry moms, screaming kids and dedicated bargain hunters into stores all over the country. When it comes to shoving matches and Springfieldian angry mobs, one could say as a whole we've forgotten what the holiday season is supposed to mean: togetherness, generosity and reflection. As we get close to the end of 2012 we have a lot to reflect on. So many people have left us in the past year, some of them closer to home than others. This show is a chance to help give back to those in need.

All proceeds will be split between the Sandy Hook School Support Fund and the Dylan Hockley Memorial Fund, founded to help children with autism and other special needs.

The bands:
The Anti-Dentites (Hamden, CT)
They lost the first round of the Space's 2005 Battle of the Bands, to a local, short-lived, country supergroup called the Tires. The Anti-Dentites were fourteen, or fifteen years old apiece. Unfazed, the band went on to play the Space throughout high school on a near-monthly basis, to a dedicated brood of kids in search of earsplitting guitar and fellow nerds. Now mostly out of college, the Anti-Dentites remain four teenagers from Hamden, spread across the country from Massachusetts to Illinois. Annual band practices now impede on at least one family party at Greeno's house.

No (Middletown, CT)
If you like rock n' roll, this is your band. So let us get your head spinning and your ass shaking.

Heavy Breath (New Haven, CT)
Heavy Breath is the sound of five (or six) friends making music together. Since early 2010, Heavy Breath has discarded formula and tradition in favor of making up the rules as they go along, creating a sound that has drawn comparisons to 108, Refused, Converge and others. They also like long walks on the beach and cuddling. No sleep til the fish stop biting.

10,000 Blades solo/acoustic (Beloit, WI)
Most of our songs are kind of a bummer. They’re fun, though, and pretty relatable, so they have that going for them. We’re into punk rock and stuff, so sometimes songs can be fast, but we also go to/have graduated from college, so our songs can also be slow. Guitars are cool when you use a distortion pedal, but also when you pluck them softly with your fingers. Singing sweetly is cool too, but so is yelling loudly.
starts at 8:00 PM
$8 donation, 21+

The Human Fly - Everything II: Variations on a Theme

Robert Mathis is another man in black, who wields his acoustic only to warn and illuminate. Not entertain you with infectious little numbers. His baritone pipes call to mind other darkly dressed gentlemen, from the likes of Nick Cave to Adam Turla. Mathis has been recording his brand of muddy doom-folk under the Human Fly handle up and down the eastern seaboard for the past couple years, while this is the first full recording to feature a full band. Everything II: Variations on a Theme is simply a different rendition of the bare boned Everything Feels Bad At Once. This re-imagined take on the low key original, unplugged version is more of a companion piece, meant to complete a sonic puzzle. But don't worry - it still sounds like lonely drives down desert highways, and soaking in the blood of haunted motel rooms. Where the comfort of city lights are reminisced upon via barren toned licks that teeter between The Damned and Alice in Chains.

Everything II was recorded in a modern studio on a whim, to reinvent sooty folk as sprawlingly evil grunge. It was all done in one fell swoop, so all the darkness you hear is natural, and not produced by robots. Clarity ups the stakes, giving The Human Fly a greater sense of immediacy. Tracks like The Fine Line and Severed Head come alive with blaring distortion and words that break on Mathis' demented hollering. The electricity in the strings still allow for opportunities to create foreboding atmosphere, while bass creeps around like carnivorous ivy. Climactic, surging guitar payoffs are the fire and brimstone behind backwoods preacher sermons.

Gritty ballad You Remind Me of Martha, is plain theatrical, adding emotive muscle to exposed bones. Primitive Ways is like a more treacherous depiction of a Cramps single, that one might hear over the opening credits of an Italian 60s horror film. The latter, along with Moth are grunge bliss. Driving backbeats bring Mathis' excellent songwriting up from the cellar. The upbeat ADHD is miles away from atmospheric bleakness, yet is a reminder of of how The Human Fly can take a new form, with his knack for many faces. An anti-super hero, who when stripped away of a backing band is still prolific.

Everything II: Variations on a Theme is perfect if you ever wanted to know what it would sound like if Danzig teamed up with Cobain circa 1992. Madness and nihilism have never sounded so heart warming. If having two versions of a release is worth doing at all, than its worth doing right. And this is done so, so goddamn right.

THE GRIMM GENERATION @ BEST VIDEO IN HAMDEN 12/5

The Grimm Generation are taking their special blend of apocalyptic pop to Best Video in Hamden, which is an establishment greatly deserving of your time and attention.

The Grimm Generation
From the flaming wreckage of the 'Record Industry' arise The Grimm Generation. The songs document the lives of the authors, in victorious shout-along choruses to stark lyrics which paint an unpretty, but accurate portrait of life in The Land Of Steady Habits. Carmen sings and writes and Jason sings and writes and plays guitar. But what The Grimm Generation really does is confess. Publicly, loudly. With feeling.

new fake babies video "dont hold your breath"

Somehow we missed this but here is an awesome new video for "Don't Hold Your Breath" from the amazing new Fake Babies Eponymous EP released earlier this year. The video, by the incredibly skilled Jimi Patterson, is highly stylized like security footage and features the band singing and shots of ladies riding a mechanical bull. Sounds good to me!!!

This is the second show at Tommy's Restaurant in Middletown, a happening spot that comes with a stocked bar, scenic patio and fantastic light show. The first show in August was a success and now they're starting to do one a month. Friday has an eclectic roster featuring two CT stalwarts - Middletown punk maestros No! (who live right down the street from Tommy's and released one of 2012's best records - Can You Dig It) and Heavy Breath. This is the start of Heavy Breath's weekend tour. Also on tour from Brooklyn, NY are Sannhet (atmospheric metal noise with AJ from Fight Night on bass) and Clean Teeth who make all sorts of ugly, pulverizing sounds. And to start things off right, there's Everything from Allston, MA who play fast, thrashy hardcore and just plain kick ass.

Introducing Them Damn Hamiltons

This newly formed band, which features many veterans of the Connecticut music scene, manage to strike gold on their debut five song demo, which was passed along to me by one of their members. They play an intoxicating blend of indie folk, country and with a bit of sea shanty thrown in for good measure. This is dark folk music.

The World Is A Beautiful Place.., Dads, Souvenirs, Dawnmother & MORE 11/10 @ THE HEIRLOM ARTS THEATRE

The Lost Riots - 1978

Lauren Lennox doesn't like the The Lost Riots. This was the band infamous for their Summer 2012 show at Pitkin Plaza's Ideat Village music festival, where the New Haven police department showed up with pepper spray. Prior to the concert, Lauren Lennox, the building manager for neighboring apartment building 360 State, had sent out an email to tenants urging them to file noise complaints against the performance. Complaints were indeed filed and cops were dispatched. Festival organizer Bill Saunders was subsequently taken away in handcuffs for failing to produce a permit for the show as well as inciting a riot (ironic!). There were about fifty people in attendance, who mostly responded by hurling some 'fuck you's' at the cops and recording Saunder's arrest, along with said 'fuck you's'. Since then, 360 State and festival organizers have reached some kind of agreement after a lengthy debate over how New Haven's culture ties in with the proper sound ordinances. All in all, it was a good story for The Lost Riots, who got their namesake before their show was cut short by their own title.

WESU Record Fair on Sunday: FREE!

WESU is having their bi-annual record fair on Sunday. It's free admission and I've personally found some great things there in the past. I'm looking forward to digging for more. The past couple times they've had food trucks outside too. And hell, it's a nice enough campus to walk around (if it's not raining - which I fear it very well might).  Good Sunday afternoon activity; it's going from 11AM-4PM. Directions here.

Empty Vessels - Restraining Order EP

Empty Vessels do that confusing category thing, where you can't tell if they're hardcore punk or something of a metal outfit. And their guitarist is female, which messes up the possibility of baritone gang choruses and awesome macho promo shots with crossed, muscly forearms. They sound heavy and dangerous - aggressive even. But also like they're having fun, and not taking themselves too seriously. They sing about cool metal shit like alien spacecraft, betrayal, owls, and Michael Cera? The whole thing just pisses me off.

Third Man Rolling Record Store at Redscroll Records Saturday (10-20-12) 6-8PM

The Third Man Rolling Record Store will be stopping at Redscroll Records on Saturday (10-20-12) from 6-8PM.

Welp, that pretty much covers it. Let me jab at you some more though.  Third Man Records is a label run by Jack White of the White Stripes (and many other projects). There is also a flagship store in Nashville, TN. As an extension of this store and within the mission of reaching as many young kids who haven't ever been to a record store Mr. White had an old food truck converted into a rolling record store. The truck carries a variety of Third Man Records releases (many of which are exclusive to the Third Man store). Here's the introductory video for the truck:

You can follow the truck on twitter here as well. They make mention of exclusives from time to time and of course say where they at the time. There is also a blog post on the Redscroll Blog here.
