Sound Hall: Chris Corsano, Bill Orcutt, Bontrager/Labbe Duo on 9/2

Sound Hall is bringing a legendary set of performers to New Haven on 9/2 with avant-garde drummer Chris Corsano, Harry Pussy's Bill Orcutt and locals Nathan Bontrager/Jason Labbe as a duo. DJ Shaki will also be spinning!

From the Facebook Event:

CHRIS CORSANO

Like Glenn Kotche and Tim Barnes, drummer Chris Corsano made a name for himself as an avant-garde drum master equally adept in pop settings, and a master inventor in both. With an expressive palette made from various prepared drum techniques, including butter knives and kitchen bowls on the drum heads, Corsano collaborated with Björk, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, and Jim O'Rourke while maintaining ongoing partnerships with the likes of saxophonist Paul Flaherty, Vibracathedral Orchestra's Mi
chael Flower, and many others.

BILL ORCUTT

Best known as the guitarist of Miami noise-rockers Harry Pussy, Bill Orcutt was already a significant name in experimental noise circles when he released his solo debut. Long interested in cutting-edge art, Orcutt had a Master's in English and had made several experimental short films, one of which sold to MTV in 1990. He also played in several local punk bands, most notably the Trash Monkeys, before forming Harry Pussy in 1992 with his wife, drummer Adris Hoyos. They worked together for the next five years, releasing a series of uncompromising and confrontational recordings on small labels and gaining acclaim from the likes of Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Sebadoh's Lou Barlow. Towards the tail end of Harry Pussy's existence in 1996, Orcutt completed his first solo recording, titled simply Solo CD. It was issued by the New York-based Audible Hiss label, and featured guest vocals from Hoyos as well as instrumental contributions from drummer Danny Arad and saxman Joe Cohen, among others.

NATHAN BONTRAGER

Nathan Bontrager is an active and wide-ranging cellist and educator. Currently based out of New Haven, CT, he performs frequently in the New York/New Haven area in addition to touring both nationally and internationally. While classically trained (MM from the University of Maryland), Bontrager has taken the technical foundation laid in years of study into the worlds of experimental, folk, and early music(s).

JASON LABBE

Jason Labbe, a drummer and percussionist, has recently performed and/or recorded with various artists in New York and New Haven, including Charles Burst, Latitude/Longitude, Weigh Down, MT Bearington, Enoch Kane, The Dust Dive, Bed Smith/Doc Mars, and others. In 2007 he received an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Virginia, where he was a Henry Hoyns Fellow. He is the author of a chapbook, Dear Photographer (Phylum Press, 2009), and his poems appear or are forthcoming in A Public Space, Conjunctions, Boston Review, Poetry, Open City, American Letters & Commentary, Vanitas, Barrow Street, Court Green, Cue, and elsewhere.
