Mares Of Thrace return to lay waste to Cherry Street once more
A lot has happened in the Mares Of Thrace camp, since they last came through these parts a few months ago and scorched the eardrums of the select few at Cherry Street. Well, for starters, drummer Stef MacKichan is no longer in the band. She's been replaced by the equally awesome Rae Amity, and they have added a bass player in the form of Scott Shellhammer (American Heritage), who played drums on the United States dates of the bands last tour and even did the incredible album cover art for their latest scorcher, "The Pilmgrimage".
With all this going on we decided to send head Mare Therese Lanz some questions, pertaining to these various issues, along with a few frivolous ones, which she was kind enough to answer in her standard, sarcastic, dry wit. So if you like what you hear, come to the show. Don't miss them again, because that would be very lame. (As always, show info is at the bottom of this article.)
Primitive Weapons debuts their dark, charismatic sounds at Cherry Street
This New York City-based loud rock band plays fast and loose with the rules of hardcore, incorporating elements of metal, doom, noise and post-punk into their dense and dark musical emanations. A few years back, they released an awesome 7" called "Cosmic Horror" on the Shinebox label and this year saw the release of their full length debut, "The Shadow Gallery" on Prosthetic. So with the band finally set to make its Connecticut debut this Thursday along with another band we just wrote about, and Rhode Island doomsters Pilgrim, we sent lead singer David Castillo some questions pertaining to the title of their new record, the band's growth, and their influences, among other things. Here are his answers. Once again, do not miss this show. The info is on the bottom.

Werewolf Police - Vulture Club
After one listen of Werewolf Police's Vulture Club, I was completely blown away (and still am). Their songs, extremely catchy dance tunes hinting, slightly, at 90s indie-rock, druges up images of colorful neon-lighted night clubs filled with brightly dressed girls dancing along to obscure new wave songs somewhere in NYC. Wow, was a sentence and a half... Anyway, Werewolf Police have a great sound that only gets better with each listen.
Getting down to the songs... they have, at times, a dark sentimental tone, yet are not cheesy in any way. In fact, they are reminiscent of early Guided by Voices. Perhaps, Guided by Voices meets Simple Minds? Totally New Wave.
The recording sounds like it came off an old mix tape, circa 1986, which has been sitting in a dank basement for 26 years. These songs should be recorded on better quality equipment for sure. The 4-track sounds neat, but doesn't do these amazing songs justice--Werewolf Police loses some of it's magic being recorded on 1/8th in tape. But, nevertheless, this band has the potential to become huge. Check out their stuff. Email the band and get them to play some more shows too.

Review: Milkshakes “Wisdom Teeth/Milkshakes Split"
Come
one, come all. Pop punk lovers must check out the CT side of this split,
featuring a band called Milkshakes.
Bands like this give me hope for the future of
pop punk. This split is for everyone who enjoys the wondrous sounds of bands
like Transit, Timeshares, or Title Fight.
Everything Feels Bad All At Once - an album by The Human Fly
"Everything Feels Bad All At Once" by The Human Fly is like a dark stormy dream of the mind. Mainly just guitar and vocals with occasional bass guitar, the minimalist sound does not detract from the deep musical sorrow that bleeds through each track.

Oh, Canada: Barn Burner bring their blazing trad metal to the Webster
Metal has arguably become a little too pretentious and precious for its own good. Worse, it's being sub-genred to death. It seems like today everyone has their own post-blackened-funeral-ambient-drone project or something very close to it. Besides being outright dull, a lot of these more artsy projects are over intellectualizing a form of music that should appeal to your lizard brain. There seems to be an overabundance of smarts these days, when really there should be more hearts, guts and yes, even hips added to the mix.

Merle's Record Rack Celebrates 50 Years
In 2012, nostalgia is everywhere.
While we surge forward with technological advancements dominating our
media and communication, we simultaneously gobble up all things
old-school. Yet, with record stores closing here and there, including
the recent closing of New Haven's Cutler's, it is clear that
nostalgia is not enough to save the old record stores.
Mike Papa recognized that fact years
ago, and thanks to his store's flexibility, Merle's Record Rack can
celebrate 50 years of memorabilia, posters, concert tickets, and
vinyl.

Review: Ovlov “Not the Same Without You EP”
Ovlov is a talented
four-piece band, half from Connecticut, the other half from Boston. Ovlov’s EP titled, “Not the Same Without You”
showcases two songs. Don’t be deceived by the lack of songs, these two tracks
are filled with pop punk goodness. The songs were produced by Julian Fader and
Carlos Hernandez at Trinity Korean Methodist Church Studio.

The Inclined Plane, Estrogen Highs, Purling Hiss at InterCambio – June 30
Live music struggles to overcome!
(cue the movie trailor announcer voice and photo slide show!) In a
world... when venues are getting shut down, or are turning into
strictly art space, and at a time... exactly the time that Ideat fest
organizer Bill Saunders was getting arrested for failing to produce a
copy of his permit to have live music until 10 just
feet away around the corner... At a place where the night's
patrons whispered talk of InterCambio itself risking closure as a
live music venue... 3 out of 4 bands scheduled to play took the stage
and gave those in attendance just what they came for.
VIDEO: The Field Recordings - (Caught Up in All the) Interludes
The Field Recording boys are at it again. This time with a fun video. The band, at the moment just a duo, rock out in a creepy attic and hang around in a weird looking empty house. The video is well produced with lots of quick cuts, smoke machines, and confetti! Check it out!
Oh, and they are looking for a bassist/keyboard player.
Farewood: Wings of Gold
In the youtube generation, so many “artists” put little thought into their output. It's comforting that there are bands like Farewood, who not only lay down beautiful musical tracks, but do so in order to bring readers to a richly developed fictional world of struggles and progress through human, or human-like interactions. In these songs of love and pain, a listener meets speakers they can identify with on a human level, as well as a witch, a ghost, and an angel.

MOUNTAIN MAN / HEAVY BREATH / NIGHT OWLS + MORE @ Heirloom Arts Theatre 7/5
As many of you have heard Danbury's amazing Heirloom Arts Theatre got raided by the cops and shut down until 7/5. They could really use your support as they wade through a silly sea of political red tape and manure. They triumphantly re-open their doors on 7/5 with Mountain Man, Heavy Breath, Night Owls and more!
