Marissa Nadler / Faces On Film / Lys Guillorn @ Cafe Nine on 6/2
Saturday is going to be a busy one, and this show is well worth your time! Marissa Nadler comes to New Haven's Cafe Nine and with the help of Faces On Film and Lys Guillorn, aim to bring you some musical bliss!
Marissa Nadler
Spin Called Nadler's 2011 full-length "one of the year's most disarming records...a cyclical finger picked beauty that, once you lean into it some, never lets you go," while Pitchfork gave it an "Albums of the Year: Honorable Mention" and an 8.1 review. NPR first listen called her music "dreamy, melancholy, and utterly captivating." The release made many year end lists including America Songwriter, WXPN, and Drowned in Sound's Favorite albums of 2011 list,
"Songs that are as gorgeous as they are elliptical and haunting" - Pitchfork
Currently she is heading out in support of her soon to be released companion to the self-titled record, aptly called "The Sister" out May 29th on her own label, Box Of Cedar Records.
Making music for nearly a decade and creating art for a lifetime her ethereal songwriting remains rich with imagery and beautiful textures.
Before moving out on her own label, Marissa released her last two critically-acclaimed efforts, Songs III: Bird on the Water (2007) and Little Hells (2009) with Kemado Records. The former led to two nominations for the 2008 PLUG awards for "best female artist of the year" and "best Americana record of the year."
Faces on Film
Recorded at the end of last summer at Q Studios in Somerville, Mass., with his latest latest co-conspirators (guitarist, Dave Hinckley; and organist/percussionist, Elio DeLuca), Some Weather, is a sprawling 10-track collection, that blends woodsy folk, pastoral indie rock, heartfelt alt-country, ‘60s British invasion, rootsy Americana and old-timey country and western and mirrors the westward trav...el and imagery his achingly poetic lyrics evoke. “The record itself is based on a recurring dream I was having,” explains Fiore. “In it, I was back in the times of the explorers. I was one of them. We were moving across new land, conquering, displacing what we found, claiming what was vacant. And it spanned my lifetime; I was young at the beginning, and old at the end.” Anchored by Fiore’s warm, reverb-drenched vocals and with each track imbued with a sense of nostalgia, the self-produced album is a slow burn that chugs like a covered wagon across the dusty, wide open plains.
Lys Guillorn
Lys Guillorn is a singer/songwriter based in New Haven, Connecticut. She is of the same musical school as Laura Veirs, and Kristin Hersh, with a little Emmylou Harris thrown in: dreamy, lyric-driven, melodically interesting, and undefinable.
Live sound is either spare and electric, focusing on lyrics and intricate guitar work, or with full band, adding a little more crunch.
Guillorn has opened for artists including: Laura Cantrell, Amy Rigby, Scout Niblett, The Handsome Family, and Nora O'Connor.
Guillorn is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter whose eponymous debut CD was released in 2003, receiving international radio airplay and notice in indie press. The CD was produced and engineered by Jeff Feuerzeig (best known as director of the films "Half Japanese: The Band That Would be King" and "The Devil and Daniel Johnston"). Feuerzeig enlisted guests Stanley Demeski (Luna, Feelies), Brenda Sauter (Feelies), Dean Wareham (Luna, Galaxie 500), Robert Quine (Voidoids, Lou Reed, Tom Waits) and Glenn Mercer (Feelies, Wake Ooloo).
