Hailing from Long Island/Brooklyn New York, UNEARTHLY TRANCE formed in 2000. Founding members Ryan (Rion) Lipynsky and Jay Newman started with the idea of a 'Metaphysical Funeral Pyre'. Like a Phoenix Undead, UNEARTHLY TRANCE instantly gained attention due to the heavy atmospheric riffs laced with viciously attacking vocals. After hearing UT's original demo tape "SonicBurialHymns", Southern Lord Recording’s Greg Anderson quickly released the debut 7" ep "Lord Humanless Awakens" for the 7" of Doom series. Within a year, UNEARTHLY TRANCE put themselves on the map and into the subconscious of the underground metal scene. Relapse Records
UNEARTHLY TRANCE’s brand new album V is currently streaming in its entirety online now via Stereogum.
Hailing from Sweden, Suma do NOT fuck around – they mean BUSINESS, and their business is cracking your skull WIDE open with their sheer, unrelenting, massive HEAVINESS. Imagine The Melvins' 'Lysol' being played at you full-blast through a wind-tunnel full of Dark Matter; THAT heavy. Throne Records
Throne is putting out a SUMA / UNEARTHLY TRANCE / "COLLABORATION" 12" EP + CD:
Each side of this record features the other band's vocalist along with some contributing noise from the other band. This unique idea all came together very spontaneously and it serves as a document of true exploration and experiment of the unknown forces of control. The results are very exciting and unlike anything each band has done. This collaboration somehow morphed the two bands together in an unprecedented yet very pleasing way. This vinyl / cd is meant to commemorate their forthcoming USA tour in the fall 2010 where the band will share the stage with each other once again.
"Sleepwalking Through A Maze" consists of music that Suma recorded in Malmo and sent to Ryan Lipynsky in Brooklyn where he recorded his words for his vocals.
Unearthly Trance tracked their music for "Victim No. 581" in NYC and Brooklyn and was then sent to Jovan were he promptly returned the track back with his vocals and sounds added.
The other track "Month of Treatment" is a harsh noise track that each member of UT recorded a "layer" and was sent to SUMA. Jovan tracked his voice and more noise was conjured up in Sweden. All of this was compiled by Jay Newman of UT who subsequently mixed all of the songs. Then finally mastered by Ryan of UT.
The whole recording project was spawned out of the loose concept of the mysterious lore of the black operation knows as MK ULTRA and the artwork reflects that.
Based in Connecticut, Pristina features ex-members of a diverse list of Northeast bands, including Dry Kill Logic, 100 Demons, Invocation Of Nehek, A Thousand Falling Skies, Born Under Saturn, and more. Revitalizing the best elements of the 90’s metallic hardcore boom, Pristina lays down the gauntlet with a menacing sound that is equally dark, driving, and hypnotic. Revolver Magazine has described Pristina as “a chaotic surge of hardcore intimidation, atonal riff bombardment, and sound-collage psych ops.”
Stone Titan describe themselves as "Mt. Everest getting fucked by Cthulhu." Gotta love a good ol' reference to Cthulhu. Psychedelic Doom band from South Windsor, CT. They also have a show Monday, October 4 at Whitney House

Tim Kasher (from Cursive/The Good Life):
Late last fall Tim Kasher went north for the winter after nearly a year of touring in support of Cursive’s 2009 release Mama, I’m Swollen. Leaving sunny Los Angeles, it was in the frosty valley of Whitefish, MT – nestled next to Big Mountain and Glacier National Park – that he set about writing and recording his debut solo album, The Game Of Monogamy. A tribute to his artistic drive and creative freedom, the album neither borrows from nor begs comparison to his two bands, Cursive and The Good Life, and all are grounded in the singular voice and perspective of his writing. Saddle Creek

Stephen Brodsky is an indie pop solo artist from Somerville, Massachusetts. He is also the lead singer and guitarist of Cave In. Hydra Head Records
Magic Man is a Boston-based duo that grew out of spare moments and idle hours during a summer spent volunteering on organic farms in the French countryside. The songs were written at several different locations in France, including a chateau, a farm, a circus festival, and a beach cottage and brought back home to the states for further recording and editing (most of which was done in small dorm rooms and transmitted between band members with the aid of the world wide web). Apse, Matt Wilga (of Stoned Ambassadors), Roman Wolfe @ Popeye's Garage, Oct. 2nd
This Saturday, October 2nd Popeye's Garage will be hosting Northampton's Apse as well as openers Matt Wilga (of Brooklyn's Stoned Ambassadors) and Roman Wolfe (New Haven) for the first of its final three shows.
Formed in Newtown, Connecticut over a decade ago, Apse has significantly expanded its reach, both sonically and musically since its early days on the local scene. At varying points referencing elements of post-punk, post-rock, krautrock, shoegaze, ambient, industrial, goth and metal, Apse's unique creative vision (led by the band's only constant member Rob Toher) can be technically hard to define. Percussion heavy rhythms, Toher's trademark vocal delivery, and liberal doses of reverb and delay are familiar elements; however, songs push and pull, morph into each other and generally don't stick to one thing for too long. The band's songs seem to be more about an exploration of ideas than two and a half minute pop perfection, though the hooks are there, scattered throughout. Despite limited stateside appeal, Apse has enjoyed significant success abroad, especially in Europe where the band has repeatedly toured to great response. They are also currently signed to ATP Recordings and have made repeat appearances at their label's namesake festival. The current incarnation of the band has been pared down to a relatively meager four-piece (including bassist John Mordecai who also performs in locals Shark and the Tyler Trudeau Attempt) although they surely can still carry a wallop live. This particular performance marks Apse's first Connecticut show in over a year and, based on our calculations, its first show in New Haven proper ever. Openers Matt Wilga (of Brooklyn's the Stoned Ambassadors) and Roman Wolfe (New Haven) bring a complementary mix of pop sensiblity (Wilga) and synth exploration (Roman Wolfe) that should go well with Apse's subtley melodic sonic stew while still retaining their own musical identity.
Shows like this don't come along very often folks (and pretty soon Popeye's Garage won't be either) so get yourselves downtown this Saturday!

Shonen Knife, Screaming Females, Eula @ Daniel Street, Sept. 29th
This Wednesday, September 29th women will be ruling the stage at Milford's Daniel Street club.
Headlining the bill will be the now legendary all-female pop-punk trio Shonen Knife. Formed in Osaka, Japan in 1981 by sisters Naoko and Atsuko Yamano, and friend Michie Nakatani, the Ramones-loving, food obsessed trio has effortlessly created kooky songs with upbeat infectious melodies and exuberant lyrics often about sweets and animals. A 29 year career has seen them tour with Nirvana (opening on the Nevermind tour), Sonic Youth, the BMX Bandits, and as part of the travelling alternative rock festival Lollapolooza and has earned them a devoted cult following the world around. Although Atsuko Yamano and Michie Nakatani are no longer part of the band (replaced, respectfully, by Ritsuko Taneda and Emi Morimoto), Shonen Knife continue to kick-ass with their sugar-sweet pop sensibilites and should not be missed.
Screaming Females
Performing second will be New Brunswick, New Jersey's Screaming Females. Formed in 2006, Screaming Females combine scorching guitars with a firmly D.I.Y. approach to create their own brand of indie rock. Led by singer/guitarist Marissa Patermoster, the band mixes equal parts Dinosaur Jr. and Sleater-Kinney to striking effect. The trio is currently touring in support of their latest album 'Castle Talk' released September 14th on Don Giovanni Records. So far the record has garnished some pretty positive reviews and is surely worth a listen.
Opening the night will be locals, Eula. Now going on 5+ years of operation, the band's whip-sharp brand of indie rock has continued to evolve to an ever finer point over time. After winning a chance to open for Mission of Burma last year, the trio, led by singer/guitarist Alyse Lamb, has done well to capitalize on said momentum by playing a continuous stream of solid shows throughout the Northeast. The band is currently finishing up work on a long in the making full-length album presumably to be released sometime in the new year. Catch them now before they become huge.

Nails is a 3-piece grind/hardcore assault formed in December 2007 by Todd Jones (ex Terror) along with the help of Taylor Young (Cremetorium), and John Gianelli. With very little internet presence, Nails has spent the past two years winning over audiences of metal/hardcore genres. Nails newest effort titled "Unsilent Death" has sold 1500 copies (CD's and vinyl) in two months with very little promotion and distribution. Nails has co-released their last two efforts with Six Feet Under Records (Mother Of Mercy, Justice, Floorpunch) and have played 40+ shows to date including an appearance at "Sound And Fury Festival 2009" and futures appearances at "This Is Hardcore 2010" as well as Southern Lord Records "Power Of The Riff 2010". Menomena are an experimental rock band from Portland, Oregon, made up of Brent Knopf on guitar, keyboards, and glockenspiel; Justin Harris on bass, guitar, baritone sax and alto sax; and Danny Seim on percussion. All members of the band share singing duties.
They self-released their debut album, I Am the Fun Blame Monster!, on May 20, 2003. The album was elaborately packaged in an 80-page flipbook that Seim designed and individually hand-assembled. It later received nationwide distribution through FILMguerrero in 2004. The title is an anagram for The First Menomena Album.
In 2005, Under an Hour was released as a three-track album of instrumental music written for and performed with Monster Squad, an experimental dance company based in Portland.
In August of 2006, Menomena signed with Barsuk Records although the band still maintains a relationship with their old label, FILMguerrero. It was stated that FILMguerrero would still be involved in their old catalog and future vinyl releases.
Menomena released their next album in 2007, titled Friend and Foe. It received relative critical acclaim — while some websites like Pitchfork Media praised the album for its effective modular pop, others like PopMatters criticized it for presenting a sense of feigned maturity. Their record release show was held in their home town of Portland, Oregon. The packaging was designed by Knopf and features artwork by graphic novelist/cartoonist Craig Thompson, consisting of die-cut shapes, decoder rings, and hidden messages. It was nominated for “Best Recording Package” at The Grammy Awards.
Suckers: The experimental side of indie pop has gotten a nice little creative boost lately, thanks, in part, to the artistic contributions of bands such as Baltimore’s Animal Collective and Portland’s Menomena. Tack another “Made in New York” outfit on this short list of artists challenging the sonic limits of modern day indie pop. Comprised of Quinn Walker, Austin Fisher, Brian Aiken, and mystery man Pan, Suckers offer indefinable and stunningly unpredictable fare that ranges anywhere on the sonic scope between sedate guitar songs and crunchy, erratic drones. It is a new musical landscape that Suckers have set out to find; one that lies beyond the fringes of more traditional pop, psychedelia, noise, and folk music. Packing their knapsacks with a wild assortment of ambient guitar work, ritualistic percussion, wolf pack vocals, and a variety of other knick knacks (organs, keys, horns, etc), Suckers set up camp in a manic, yet wildly imaginative place where pop music is contrived of equal parts melody and dissonance; a place where musical limits do not account for much. - DELI MAGAZINE, David Pitz 2007
Tu Fawning is a Portland, OR 4 piece band started by Corrina Repp and Joe Haege, augmented soon after its inception by members Liza Rietz and Toussaint Perrault. Haege (current member of Menomena and founder of 31knots) was a longtime fan of Repp’s hushed and understated emotional approach to songwriting, which has always had a strong following in Portland. This brought them to work together on Repp’s last solo album, which was the first “outside” release for Mark Kozelek’s (Red House Painters) artist-owned Caldo Verde records. To the surprise of both of them, they found themselves crawling out of their respective shells to create a new and exciting process that was nowhere near its end.

Whatever happened to crazed, anarchic, fuck-it-all hardcore punk. The type that rages with a bug-eyed crazy edge that leaves the listener feeling both energized and destroyed at the same time. It just seems that there are too many bands out there are toeing the line, making safe hardcore records, that lack in energy and adventure.
Well, Trash Talk are definitely not one of the hardcore bands that play it safe, whether it be their scalding discs, or go-for-broke or go-home live shows, the band is committed, to bringing back some of the danger and dark allure of a genre that has been taken over by people playing safe, formulaic music. You know people either too concerned with style or what type of vegan dish they are making for dinner to the point they forget about making insurgent music that has an explosive edge.
On their most recent CD, "Eyes & Nines", released earlier this year on their own Trash Talk Collective record label, the band, which features Lee Spielman on vocals, Garrett Stevenson on guitar, Spencer Pollard on bass/vocals and Sam Bosson on drums, have a song called "Explode" which is an apt title for a song that takes off like a shot from a cannon, only pausing for a brief punk rock breakdown in middle, and also features guest vocals from Matt Caughthran of the Bronx, before picking up the pace for the finish. It's exhilarating.
But if you want a change of pace they throw in a sludge punk crawler in "Hash Wednesday" halfway through the disc. At four minutes, on a 10-song 18-minute CD, it's nearly epic and shows that the band can mix it up with panache.
In a way, they are following in the footsteps of their heroes Black Flag, who were able to play it any way they wanted too, regardless of what their audience expected of them. It's what made Black Flag exciting and it's what makes Trash Talk exciting, even though they aren't just a carbon copy of the Flag, they are more unified in spirit, than mere mimicry.
Live, they have been known to tear down the barrier between the audience and themselves with lead singer Spielman usually diving into the crowd and causing havoc. He has been known to hit himself with the mic and even start a few fights. Suffice to say, they know how to raise a ruckus.
One wonder's how this will play out in the lush confines of Lily's Pad, who has already seen a awesomely chaotic performance by Fucked Up in recent months, along with an upcoming show from grind-noise terrorists Nails two days before Trash Talk opens for Envy, but one thing is for certain, it is going to be a wild time.
So get there early, this is definitely something you don't want to miss.
Since their inception in 1992, Envy has become a dominant band in the independent heavy music scene in Japan, alongside fellow innovative head-splitters like MONO, Boris, Corrupted and Melt-Banana. Their music, through their own evolution, encompasses a sound where pure emotional intensity and elegant, fragile beauty perfectly coexist. They have recorded countless singles and albums, including split releases with Thursday, Jesu, This Machine Kills, Endeavor, Six Pence and Yaphet Kotto. They have toured Japan and Europe with the likes of friends and UK labelmates Mogwai and ISIS. In 1997 and 2000, they toured throughout Asia, playing to audiences in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Korea. Envy have toured Europe four times, including two invitations to perform at the legendary All Tomorrow's Parties Festival. They have toured North America only twice in their two decade career, in 2005 and 2006; this year will see Envy return to the United States for their lengthiest tour yet for their upcoming new album Recitation out on October 12. They are one of the most innovative and world-renowned independent Japanese bands and are widely considered to be one of the best live bands in the world.
"Think about the loudest band with the most impassioned vocalist you've ever listened to, then multiply it by somewhere around 50. Congratulations; your mind is now prepared to absorb the awesomeness that is Envy." - Alternative Press
In the last year, Touché Amoré have become a vibrant part of the flourishing West Coast hardcore punk scene, successfully bridging gaps between subgenres. By playing their explosive and sincere music in every basement, VFW hall, club and space up and down the West coast, along side hardcore torchbearers Killing the Dream, Trash Talk and This is Hell as well as like-minded, discordant bands Ampere, Comadre and La Quiete, they have brought a feeling of togetherness and positivity to a scene they love. Unafraid to play their emotionally charged fury in front of uninitiated crowds, Touche Amore has even shared the stage with upbeat pop-punk bands such as Broadway Calls and folk-punk heroes Fake Problems making close friends along the way.
And So I Watch You From Afar

Fake Babies, If Jesus Had Machine Guns, Silas Finch
Saturday, October 2, 2010, at Artspace Underground:
Location:
ARTSPACE UNDERGROUND
50 Orange Street
New Haven CT
The first Underground of the school year features performances by local heroes Fake Babies and If Jesus Had Machine Guns, with a live build by Silas Finch.
Fake Babies were recently named the best band in Connecticut as part of The Boston Phoenix's 50 Bands in 50 States, pitting them against the likes of Sleigh Bells and Wavves in an online race to the top. Fake Babies have also shared the stage with Yeasayer, Indian Jewelry, Light Asylum (DJ), These Are Powers, Nite Jewel, Kingdom, Suckers and Dead Meadow. They provide "dirty soul for the alive and well in this little ol' world." Their debut full length album "We Started Blues" is forthcoming on Safety Meeting Records.
If Jesus Had Machine Guns is a project of Jimi Patterson, a filmmaker and musician based in New Haven and New York. If Jesus Had Machine Guns makes angsty synth-ridden bedroom recordings that evoke Ariel Pink or Anton Newcombe, with the help of an ever-evolving cast of supporting players and musicians.
New Haven based artist Silas Finch makes intricate, interactive sculptures from found and salvaged materials. He'll be performing a live build in the gallery.
DJ Booty Beats (Nate from EULA) will be spinning.
The Underground series brings alternative music, experimental time-based art, and cutting-edge performances to Artspace. The event runs from 8 pm - 11 pm, and admission is $5. Curated by Madison Moore, with drinks by 116 Crown. Dress to impress!

Bettie Serveert is an indie-rock band from The Netherlands. Their name, which translates to “Bettie serves,” is taken from a series of tennis instructional books by Dutch tennis player Betty Stove, who lost the Wimbledon Ladies singles final in 1977. Comprising vocalist Carol Van Dijk (vocals), Peter Visser (guitar), Herman Bunskoeke (bass) and Berend Dubbe (drums) they originally formed in 1986 as a side-project of De Artsen. After De Artsen split up in 1990, Bettie Serveert became a full-time project. Bettie Serveert released their debut album “Palomine” in 1992, which, fifteen years after its release, is still a modern indie rock classic, wonderfully blending together influences of Velvet Underground and Neil Young with melancholic lyrics, catchy tunes and a lo-fi-feel. Second Motion Records
Fatal Film
Fatal Film is a four piece indie rock/post-punk band from New London, CT. Put the power of Hüsker Dü behind the gritty pop of Guided by Voices and you'll end up with something close to their sound.
Atrina makes music that is equal parts minimalist melodicism, counterpunctal cacophony, and decibel-pushing dissonance. Angular, but accessible. Complex, yet catchy. Eclectic, and electrifying, Atrina sounds like they mean it—with an " earnestness matched by technical expertise and solid songwriting, deep, heavy riffing, a brooding and moody sensibility. Singer Kelly L’Heureux sounds impassioned and entirely straightforward, her voice creating a compelling push-and-pull between vocals and band." Effortlessly blending sharp melodies, dynamic guitar rhythms and honest intensity, Atrina's sound harkens back to some of indie rock's greatest—Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, The Breeders, Blonde Redhead, Slint, Radiohead, Helium—while looking forward to create a sound that’s all their own, as evidenced on their 2 self-released EPs, including 2008's {beautiful evidence}.

VRSA - Old Man Gray
Been cooking up a new way to talk about a bunch of local releases in single monthly posts. But this one has been sitting at the top of the draft heap for a while now, so here it is on its own.
The debut from VRSA, called Old Man Gray (self-released), is charged-by-gloom rock with simultaneous nods to both slow-core and doom metal. The band is more aggressive than heavy (even the growls are more of a breathy hiss), and they aren't out to stun with abrupt math rock surprises. VRSA are simply somber. They do go into some bizarre territory with Viola by creeping though an uneasy prog-jam. Quaalude is another oddity that distills the quieter brooding moments across the record into one hushed folk-like tune set to a chorus of peeper frogs. Otherwise, VRSA sticks to metal-based post-rock. Revolution Cycle is a standout example, which sounds a little like Isis inspired by Slint.

Benefit for Jamie Saxton w/Broken, The Vultures, Lord Fowl, Iron Hand @ Cafe 9, Sept. 25th
On Saturday, September 25th locals Broken, The Vultures, Lord Fowl and Iron Hand will be performing at Cafe Nine as part of a benefit show for local musician Jamie Saxton who is currently battling cancer.
From Safety Meeting Records head Carlos Wells:
"We're doing up a benefit show for Jamie Saxton, longtime friend and area musician (of Beer Scouts of America, Five9Five, & Tijuana Hot Cocks), who is currently wrestling with cancer. Our hope is to put a lot of people in a room, get some good music going, some raffling, and some good times and hopefully our proceeds will help ease the burden on the Saxtons during an already difficult time. Please help spread the word and come down ready to drink, get rowdy, and win some prizes all for a really good cause. Show starts promptly at 9pm! So don't show up at 10 thinking you're not missing anything."
There's a $10 suggested donation for the show (or more if you can). In addition, there will be a raffle with prizes from a lot of New Haven area businesses including Firehouse 12, Haven Skate Park, Lovecraft Tattoo, and more.
Even if you don't know Jamie, the show alone, featuring some of New Haven's best punk and hard rock bands, should be well enough reason to get yourself to Cafe Nine on September 25th.

Uz Jsme Doma, Kimono Draggin', Shawn Persinger is Prester John @ Daniel Street, Sept. 23rd
On Thursday, September 23rd Milford's Daniel Street will play host to a trio of highly creative bands: Uz Jsme Doma, Kimono Draggin' and Shawn Persinger is Prester John.
Formed in 1985 in what is now the Czech Republic, Uz Jsme Doma is named after a Czech expression that loosely translates into "now we're at home" (meaning "now I get it"). Stamped "antisocial" by the Communist government of the time, the group spent its first years playing illegal concerts, going through numerous changes in their lineup, and writing an impressive repertoire of avant-punk songs influenced by Pere Ubu, the Residents, the Sex Pistols, and the Rock-in-Opposition movement. After the Velvet Revolution of 1989, Uz Jsme Doma was one of the first groups to establish an alternative rock sound for the new republic. Along with Plastic People of the Universe, Uz Jsme Doma frequently toured the U.S., establishing a dedicated cult following along the way. Uz Jsme Doma are punk in spirit, activists at heart, and strongly avant-garde in their dissonances, complex songs, and humor.
Opening for Uz Jsme Doma are locals Kimono Draggin' and Shawn Persinger is Prester John, two bands who share the headliner's notoriety for complex arrangements and punk-inspired energy. Kimono Draggin' in particular aligns itself well with Uz Jsme Doma both for the seemingly endless twist and turns of their arrangements and for their tenacious live energy. Shawn Persinger is Prester John also shares a kindred musical spirit to the headliner although usually on a more stripped down level instrumentation wise. Overall this billing brings together three different artists whose musical creativity and pure love of form is evident in their music through and through.
For anyone interested in great guitar work, interesting arrangements and near punk energy, do not miss this show!

Bettie Serveert (rescheduled), two Atrina shows, and Mates, Oh Land, Bearington
There are three shows coming up that are linked in a few ways. Friday, September 24, is Atrina, Farewood and AM Aesthetic at Chas' Place, in Meriden, CT. Then, Sunday,
Both Atrina and Farewood go back to the beginnings of CT Indie. Farewood was one of the very first bands that I came across when CT Indie was just a MySpace page back in early 2007. They were friendly and supportive as hell. And of course, the interview with Kelly L'Heureux of Atrina was the first for the blog after it got rolling a year later. Shaki Presents hosted Bearington with Begushkin at BAR around the time of that interview. Never in a million years, let alone two, would I have imagined M.T. Bearington would play The Webster, though. I am not sure what happened over at The Webster, but I am pretty sure it involved someone's ass and their head being forcefully removed from it. It's about time. With Kelly playing bass for Bearington, and John Panos, the nob and key tweaker, and backing vocal shrieker for M.T. Bearington, who also had a recent jaunt with Mates of State, some might say Connecticut is incestuous. I call it collaborative.

Since the inception of AM Aesthetic in 2008 as a songwriting experiment with Rob Suchecki on vocals and guitar, and Pat Raimondi on bass, things have progressed quite quickly into: "AM Aesthetic: The Hardest Working Band You've Never Heard Of". With the addition of RJ Dowhan on drums in 2009, the band quickly hit the road and began to play a truly outrageous amount of shows, having played in every corner of Connecticut at least twice, as well as New York and the tri-state area. College radio was quick to pick up tracks off the band's first EP, "(AM)Bivalence" and throw them into rotation as well. Aside from driving to and playing an endless slew of shows, AM Aesthetic handles their own recording, mixing, mastering, photography, web design, management, booking, videography, etc. Basically, If you're not watching them play live and in person, rest assured they are locked in a dimly lit room somewhere, working tirelessly on a song you've yet to hear. In 2010, AM Aesthetic plan to have "(AM)bivalence" available through all major digital retailers, and hope to release an as-yet-untitled full length record shortly after. 2010 is going to be a big year for AM Aesthetic, and it's just the right time to jump on the train and hold on for dear life.
Farewood arose from the decay of the once vibrant industrial town of Meriden. Located in Central Connecticut, Meriden is known as the "Silver City" and is the halfway point between New York and Boston. The members of Farewood grew up listening to mid to late 80's indie rock and post punk. Bands such as Sonic Youth, Afghan Whigs, Big Black, Samhain, Dinosaur Jr, Fugazi, The Cure, The Sundays, and Cocteau Twins were all major influences on the development of Farewood's sound. The members of Farewood would spend their teenage years going to as many shows as possible, mesmerized by the emotional impact that indie rock had, the band decided to lend their own voice to the continuing evolution of original rock.
Continue for the Atrina bio.

Mates of State are an indie rock duo, active since 1997. The group is composed of the husband-and-wife team Kori Gardner (vocals, Yamaha Electone and Hammond B-3 electric organs, microKORG and Casio synthesizers, Yamaha and Rhodes electric pianos, piano, and occasional guitar) and Jason Hammel (vocals, drum set, glockenspiel, other percussion, and occasional Casio synthesizer). Barsuk Records
Oh Land is a peculiar new cinematic electropop Dane who recently sailed across the sea to the artistic haven of Brooklyn, NY. With an opera singer for a mother, a theater organist for a father and Björk’s Homogenic on constant rotation, Oh Land was enraptured by the combination of experimental and classical arts. “My goal is to sound like I’m from 2050, but still feel really classic, like the music is an old friend,” said Oh Land. She spent her days pirouetting as a ballet dancer at the Danish Royal Ballet Academy when an injury forced her to reinvent herself and discover her true talent and passion as a musician.
M.T. Bearington is wild and intense psych-pop. Matt Thomas fronts this CT Indie darling. The LP The Cloak of Nouns and Loss was reviewed here

We all miss Shaki Presents at BAR. Lilly's might not have the cool little caves to park your ass in, or the candles, or low stage, but the spirit haunts, and the soul is eternal. Woods, MV + EE, and DJ Joey Maddalena? Fuck yes. Manic conjures and Lilly's plays host to a musical séance Friday night.
Woods is an acid/strange/psych folk rock band based out of Brooklyn, New York. Members include Jeremy Earl, Jarvis Taveniere, and G. Lucas Crane. The band is known for strange and upbeat folk rock hymns. Decaying before taking off and dancing before dying. The songs range from vocal-harmony jams to meandering and noisy tinges of noise. Woodsist Records
MV&EE is a group of musicians focused around Matt Valentine, sometimes referred to as MV, and his partner Erika Elder. Matt Valentine was in the neo-psychedelic group, The Tower Recordings. While the duo record under many different names, including MV&EE Medicine Show and The Bummer Road, most of the records center around both artists and feature a rotating cast of additional musicians. Their style is self-described as “lunar ragas”, with many of the lyrics dealing with celestial imagery. They combine Indian raga style composition (with increasing authenticity as they become more accomplished with time) with Appalachian folk and post-psychedelic electrical experimentalism. They use Western and Eastern acoustic instruments amplified and augmented with effects such as reverb, delay, and flange. Their compositions occasionally feature vocals, which are off-kilter and rambling, while seeming drugged. Ecstatic Peace

Hallelujah the Hills arose from the ashes of Boston's late lamented the Stairs. When the Stairs collapsed at the end of 2005, lead singer/songwriter Ryan Walsh and drummer Eric Meyer announced the formation of their new band. Named after Adolphas Mekas' 1963 cult comedy, Hallelujah the Hills settled on an initial lineup of Walsh and Meyer, David Bentley (cello, guitar), Joe Marrett (bass), and Matt Brown (synth, samples, guitar, melodica). Trumpeter Brian Rutledge joined a few months later, and Elio DeLuca replaced Brown on keyboards in early 2007. Hallelujah the Hills incorporates the elements of Guided by Voices' lo-fi power pop, the woozy marching band music of Neutral Milk Hotel, and the off-kilter warblings of David Byrne. You may recognize these guys as they just supported Titus Andronicus at their recent SOLD OUT show. They are now returning for a full headline set! Misra Records
Luke Elliot (with band)
This New Jersey native’s first full-length record, “In Our Embrace”, has all of that grit in every crack and crevasse of its runtime. And not in any sort of pedal-steel parody way, but in the way of withered waltzes, barreling ragtime, and hypnotic piano dirges underpinned by literate narrative that coats each melody like chipped paint on a broken down jalopy. There are some easy comparisons to Leonard Cohen, and occasional shades of Dylan (Ballad of a Thin Man, perhaps?), and maybe some of those real piano-y Tom Waits’ albums that still haven’t gotten their due (“Foreign Affairs” or “One From the Heart”).
Midi & The Modern Dance:
Ambience, intense lyrics, beautiful singing voices and basically anything that's mature, intelligent rock...Midi’s tight live show and their surprisingly professional-sounding EP make the band full of promise.
