Maps & Atlases offer songs that wrestle themselves from flailing, algebraic fits of intricate guitar notes and drum ruptures to lulling, voice-driven melodies that speak stories using lyrical images strung together like soup cans chasing a Cadillac. Mostly influenced by experimental and technically adept musicians such as Hella, Don Caballero, and Psych-Folkies Devendra Banhart and Six Organs of Admittance, Maps & Atlases create a distinctive blend of the intricate and organic.

Drink Up Buttercup:
Lumbering drums, jangling shakers, electronic squiggles, and whimsical, ragged shouts accompany the strutting bass line and stomping guitar. It’s all just loose and playful enough to avoid coming across as overly nostalgic.
Kanine Records
Fugue:
"Adjectives are a neat grammatical function, but don't seem to adequately capture the musical product of Fugue. With the foundation of two guitars, one keyboard, drums and bass, Fugue manipulates basic musical functions of time signatures and scale to shape a finished product trumping any words. Maybe that's why they call it math rock." - Elise Granata (Inkwell Press)
I'm seeing Maps & Atlases and Drink Up Buttercup in Boston the next day... I wish I was in CT instead so I could catch Fugue as well!
ReplyDeleteMagic Man is playing with them in Boston! Check those guys out they are great.
